Fairfield University Art Museum hosts acclaimed U.S. semiquincentennial flag exhibition

The Fairfield University Art Museum is presenting a major loan exhibition, “For Which It Stands…,” as part of a university-wide commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States.

On view through July 25, 2026, the exhibition features more than 70 works by a diverse range of artists exploring the American flag from the early 20th century to the present. The collection includes pieces by Jasper Johns, Faith Ringgold, Robert Rauschenberg, and Julie Mehretu, alongside a newly commissioned textile sculpture by Maria de Los Angeles.

The show has gained national recognition, with The Wall Street Journal listing it among top ways to “Celebrate the Nation Across the Nation,” and Hyperallergic naming it one of “15 Exhibitions Outside of NYC to See this Spring.”

“This exhibition is an opportunity for all of us to examine the narratives that have shaped our country, particularly those that have been overlooked or challenged,” said Carey Mack Weber, executive director of the museum and exhibition curator.

Works have been lent by various institutions, including the Yale University Art Gallery, the Delaware Museum of Art, and the State of Connecticut’s CT Artists Collection. A video tour of the gallery has already surpassed 57,000 views online.
