Connecticut Department of Agriculture distributes millions in rapid relief dairy payments

The Connecticut Department of Agriculture has processed more than $11.8 million in stabilization payments to 64 dairy farms across the state. The funding represents the first cycle of a $22.5 million relief package authorized by Governor Ned Lamont from the state’s Federal Cuts Response Fund.

State officials sent participation notices to all licensed Connecticut cow dairy farms within three days of receiving the funds. The agency is continuing direct outreach to 11 remaining farms to determine their participation status in the program.

The completed June payments account for more than 98 percent of the total milk production in Connecticut. Individual farm disbursements were calculated at a rate of $5.5415 per hundredweight, using the average monthly production data from the past six months.

An additional distribution of $3 million is scheduled to take place in October. The final $7.5 million of the total emergency allocation will be held for consideration during upcoming long-term planning efforts.

To address future industry needs, the department established the Dairy Farming Sustainability Working Group under Public Act 26-75. The committee convened for its first meeting on Friday, June 26, to begin developing permanent recommendations for the state’s dairy sector.

The panel consists of representatives from independent producers, state agencies, agricultural organizations, and dairy cooperatives. The group will meet through the end of 2026 and must submit a final report to the General Assembly by January 1, 2027.
