Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum hosts Halloween lecture on body snatching in Norwalk

The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum in Norwalk will host a Halloween-themed lecture titled “Grave Objections: A History of Body Snatching for Science” on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026. The program runs from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will feature light refreshments following the main presentation.

Guest speaker James Henry will lead the presentation, drawing on his background as a New York City tour guide and a nine-year docent at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Henry specializes in New York City cemeteries and burial grounds and is currently writing and illustrating a book on the global history of body snatching.

The talk examines the historical shortage of legal cadavers for medical training, which led professional grave robbers to exhume corpses from local burial sites. The presentation details how the trade targeted marginalized communities and sparked public unrest, including the 1788 anatomy riot in New York City.

The lecture will also highlight defensive measures families used to protect burial sites from grave robbing. It will trace the continuation of body snatching across generations until the establishment of modern anatomy laws and updated medical standards.

The event is part of the museum’s 2026 Lecture Series, sponsored in part by The DiNardo-Aiello Family Fund and The Sante Center for Natural Healing.
