Nehantic Heritage Day 2026 invites public to experience Indigenous history and culture in Niantic

The Nehantic Native Nation and the East Lyme Historical Society will host Nehantic Heritage Day 2026 on Saturday, Oct. 3, at McCook Park in Niantic. The free event offers visitors an opportunity to experience the Nehantic homeland through ceremony, Indigenous culture, music, storytelling, art, and historical exhibits from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This year’s gathering takes place during the nationwide commemoration of the 250th anniversary of America and will focus on the participation of Nehantic men in the American Revolution. Historical programming throughout the day will honor more than 25 known Nehantic men who served during the Revolutionary War.

Activities begin at 10:30 a.m. with music from the Stony Creek Fife and Drum Corps, leading into an opening ceremony at 10:45 a.m. at Wigwam Rock. The ceremony includes historical reflections, a reading of the names of Nehantic Revolutionary War veterans, a military salute, the lighting of a ceremonial fire, and flute music by Strong Eagle Daly.

Dr. John Pfeiffer, Nehantic Tribal Historic Preservation Officer and historian, will provide historical context for the veterans’ stories. Pfeiffer noted that the event offers a chance to share these experiences within the broader history of Native American participation in the struggle for independence.

A featured cultural program starting at 1:00 p.m. will feature historian and educator Deborah Spears Moorehead discussing the contributions of Native American sailors and soldiers, including those at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Traditional storytelling, music, and cultural insights will continue into the afternoon.

Between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., attendees can explore historical exhibits, an artifact identification table, and information on a newly published book about Nehantic history by Pfeiffer. The grounds will also feature local artisans, food offerings, community organization displays, and a Young Stewards Passport activity for children.

The public is invited to join a closing ceremony and Honor Song at approximately 3:30 p.m. to conclude the day’s observances. The opening ceremony at Wigwam Rock will take place outdoors regardless of weather, while remaining activities will move to an indoor location if conditions require.
