American Mural Project announces summer youth sessions from woodworking to music

Registration has opened for the Summer @AMP 2026 youth programs in Winsted, with several sessions already showing limited availability. Hosted by the American Mural Project, the four- and five-day sessions focus on collaborative art, construction, music, and science for children and teenagers.

All programs take place on-site at 90 Whiting Street. The organization keeps group sizes small, and no prior experience is required for any of the scheduled activities. Families registering multiple children can access a 25-dollar sibling discount using a promotional code, and an early bird discount was available for registrations completed before March 31, 2026.

The early summer lineup starts with high-demand sessions like Outdoor Design and Build, running June 22 to June 26 and June 29 to July 3 for ages 12 and up. Led by Chip Heuer and Justin Truskauskas, the woodworking program maintains a three-to-one student-to-teacher ratio as participants construct wood projects like an outdoor stage, pergola, and planter boxes in the venue’s Nature Playground. Simultaneously, the Teen Art Studio Immersive runs from June 22 to June 26 under the guidance of certified visual arts teacher Shana Bazelmans, allowing teens to direct their own independent and collaborative art projects.

Bazelmans will also lead a specialized Fiber Arts and Fashion program from June 29 to July 3 for teenagers ages 13 and older, teaching foundational sewing, weaving, and textile design. For younger children, a new science and art program called STEAM @AMP #TeamTurtle will run from July 6 to July 10 for ages 7 to 11. Led by teaching artist Calla Begley, the session features virtual interactions with marine conservationists from the VerdiAzul turtle hatchery in Costa Rica, letting students track live turtle egg incubation data.

Later in July, the schedule transitions to younger age brackets and musical performance. Art Play runs July 13 to July 17 as a morning half-day session for ages 6 to 8, led by Lanea Collins of The Teaching Artist Hub. Following that, a full-day program called The Dabbler runs from July 20 to July 24 for ages 9 to 12, focusing on drawing skills and building with natural materials under the direction of Kwadwo Adae. The summer lineup concludes with Band Lab from July 27 to July 31, where musicians ages 10 and up will write and practice songs with Sam Guglielmino of Mad River Music, culminating in a public gallery performance on July 31 at 2:00 p.m.
