Westport Country Playhouse to host reading of Lewis Black comedy ‘One Slight Hitch’

Westport Country Playhouse will present a Script in Hand playreading of “One Slight Hitch,” a comedy by Lewis Black, on Monday, May 4, at 7 p.m.

Directed by Kevin O’Rourke, the play is a farcical look at a wedding day disrupted by an unexpected guest. The story follows Delia, a mother determined to execute a perfect wedding for her daughter, Courtney, in 1980s Ohio. The situation unravels when an ex-boyfriend from Courtney’s past arrives, forcing her father to hide the guest and maintain order.

“I’ve been onstage screaming at audiences for years about everything that’s wrong, and I thought, ‘OK, here – let’s just have a good time,’” said Black. “I wanted to write something where people could sit back and laugh and recognize themselves in it.”

Black, a Grammy and Emmy award winner known for his “Back in Black” segments on “The Daily Show,” drew inspiration for the play after being invited to an ex-girlfriend’s wedding.

“Everyone loves Lewis Black for his razor-sharp stand-up,” said Mark Shanahan, Script in Hand series curator and Playhouse artistic director. “But he’s also a remarkably funny playwright, and ‘One Slight Hitch’ proves it, crafting a farce that feels both wildly entertaining and all too familiar.”

Tickets for the reading are $35. The performance has a running time of approximately two hours with one intermission and is recommended for audiences ages 13 and up. The eight-member cast is expected to be announced soon.

The 2026 Script in Hand series is supported by Joyce Hergenhan and the White Barn Program of the Lucille Lortel Foundation. Additional programming support is provided by Barbara Streicker, with media sponsorship from Moffly Media and WSHU Public Radio.
