National Endowment for the Arts awards grant to New Britain Museum of American Art

The New Britain Museum of American Art has received a $65,000 Grants for Arts Projects award from the National Endowment for the Arts. The funding will support two upcoming exhibitions during 2026.

The grant will fund John Hitchcock: We are Defined by the Beat and Architects of Being: Louise Nevelson and Esphyr Slobodkina. The exhibitions form part of the museum’s programming presented around the country’s 250th anniversary.

John Hitchcock: We are Defined by the Beat runs from May 16, 2026, through January 17, 2027, as the artist’s first mid-career retrospective. The exhibition features work by the Kiowa Tribe member across printmaking, neon, textiles, sound, video, and installation, addressing themes of Indigenous displacement and community resilience.

Architects of Being: Louise Nevelson and Esphyr Slobodkina will be on display from July 30 through November 1, 2026. Organized by the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, the exhibition features over 80 abstract works including paintings, sculpture, assemblages, textiles, and jewelry by both artists.

The museum received local and national support for both projects, with additional funding provided by the Chase Family Fund for Curatorial Excellence, the Roberts Foundation for the Arts, and private donors. Founded as the nation’s oldest museum dedicated exclusively to American art, the institution continues to showcase historical and contemporary works.
