Museum of Connecticut History launches sixth year of ‘Hiking Through History’

The Museum of Connecticut History has announced the return of its “Hiking Through History” series, a program of guided tours exploring the state’s scenic and historic landscapes beginning May 15.

The series, now in its sixth year, features monthly hikes led by Museum Curator Patrick Smith. The tours occur at various locations across Connecticut from May through October 2026.

In recognition of the nation’s 250th anniversary, the 2026 schedule includes two hikes focused on the American Revolution. On June 5, the program will visit Fort Griswold in Groton and Fort Trumbull in New London to discuss shoreline defense. A July 24 hike in Hartford will examine the Revolution’s impact on the city and include a visit to the museum’s Connecticut’s Revolution exhibit, which opens July 4.

The full 2026 schedule includes:

May 15: Dividend Pond Trails and Archaeological District, Rocky Hill.
June 5: Fort Griswold, Groton and Fort Trumbull, New London.
July 24: Revolutionary Hartford and Museum of Connecticut History.
August 28: Norwich Heritage Walk and Uncas Leap Heritage Area, Norwich.
September 18: West Rock, Hamden.
October 9: Old Furnace State Park, Killingly.

All walks begin at 10 a.m. and last approximately two hours. While there is no fee to participate, registration is required as space is limited.

Most tours are designed for a leisurely to moderate pace, though the museum advises that some trails are unpaved or uneven. Participants are encouraged to bring water, snacks, and appropriate walking gear. Registration can be completed by contacting Patrick Smith at the Museum of Connecticut History.
