New Britain Museum of American Art awarded $200,000 Henry Luce Foundation grant

The New Britain Museum of American Art has received a $200,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation to support an upcoming initiative exploring the intersections of Puerto Rican and U.S. art, museum officials announced Monday.
The funding will support “Puerto Rico in Focus: Historical Interventions,” an installation scheduled for 2027-28. The project is part of a multi-year effort to examine the historical and contemporary relationships between the two regions through exhibitions and community engagement.
The “Historical Interventions” exhibition will pair historical Puerto Rican works with the museum’s permanent collection, covering art from the 18th century through the 1950s. The grant will also fund a research associate and the development of bilingual labels, which the museum plans to eventually implement throughout the entire facility.

“This generous grant will allow the museum to bring Puerto Rican art into conversation with our historic permanent collection and expand accessibility through the translation of bilingual exhibition labels,” Executive Director and CEO Brett Abbott said in a statement.
The exhibition, opening in fall 2027, will be collaboratively curated by Dr. Mercedes Trelles of the University of Puerto Rico and Dr. Stephanie Mayer Heydt of the New Britain Museum of American Art. It will feature works by Puerto Rican masters such as José Campeche y Jordán and Francisco Oller alongside American artists including John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer.
A bilingual scholarly catalogue documented by Hirmer Press will also be published as part of the project.
The initiative aims to raise questions regarding nationality and identity by highlighting the distinctions and commonalities between the artistic traditions of Puerto Rico and the United States.
