Artist Tim Youd to retype ‘Revolutionary Road’ in live performance at The Aldrich

The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum has announced “Connecticut Retyped,” a live durational performance by artist Tim Youd as part of his ongoing “100 Novels Project.”
From June 7 through June 21, Youd will retype Richard Yates’s 1961 debut novel, “Revolutionary Road,” on the same model typewriter used by the author. The performance coincides with the centenary year of Yates, whose novel is famously set in suburban Connecticut.
The “100 Novels Project” involves Youd retyping an entire book onto a single sheet of paper backed by a second sheet. The process layers every word of the manuscript until the paper becomes an ink-saturated, abstract record of the novel.

Youd will work daily in public view, moving across the museum’s campus and galleries. Visitors are invited to interact with the artist while he is on-site. The completed work, a framed diptych serving as a relic of the performance, will be presented during “The Aldrich Decennial: I am what is around me,” a new series spotlighting Connecticut-based artists.
A resident of Los Angeles, Youd has retyped 87 novels to date at locations across the United States and Europe, including the historic homes of William Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor and Virginia Woolf.
The performance is free to view when Youd is working on the museum grounds and is included with museum admission when he is stationed inside the galleries.
