Aviation and aerospace workers receive free admission during American Mural Project’s September line-up
The American Mural Project has announced its schedule of events for September 2026, featuring theater, family activities, film, and live music. Highlights of the upcoming programming include a presentation of the 9/11 drama “The Guys” by Herstory Theatre, a dinosaur-themed Family Day, the return of the Teen Art Studio, and a lecture and screening focused on the history of labor group The Wobblies. The lineup also features a Piano Happy Hour with jazz artist Jen Allen. Throughout the month, AMP will continue its WORKS FOR ME! program, providing free admission to all employees in the aviation and aerospace industries.

History After Hours: LIVE THEATER
The Guys: One-Act Play presented by Herstory Theater
One of the first plays written immediately after September 11, playwright Anne Nelson’s one-act play is a sensitive examination of loss, connection, and the power of language.
In the wake of the September 11 attacks, New York City fire captain Nick has the monumental task of writing eulogies for eight of his men who were killed. Unable to adequately put his memories and sentiments into words, he enlists the help of Joan, a news editor and former journalist. Nick and Joan come from completely different worlds and, were it not for the attacks, never would have met. United through tragedy, Nick and Joan discover a shared humanity as they craft poignant remembrances of “the guys.”
Written in just nine days as a staged reading, The Guys has had something of a celebrity history. It opened at the Flea Theater on December 4, 2011, exactly twelve weeks to the day after the attack, and starred Simpson’s wife, Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray; since then it has been performed around the world by celebrities such as Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Helen Hunt, Bill Irwin, Anthony LaPaglia, Swoosie Kurtz, and others. Today it continues to be produced around the country and around the world.
Tickets are $20 for adults; $10 for students and can be purchased via AmericanMuralProject.org or at door (subject to availability). Part of AMP’s year-long celebration of America250.

TEEN ART STUDIO
A welcoming, drop-in teen art studio—where you can explore new materials, make friends, and grow as an artist. Creative exploration and community go hand in hand at Teen Art Studio for ages 13 to 18 on the second Saturday of every month. Guided by a teaching artist, you can try new materials, develop your own ideas, and connect with others in a relaxed, supportive environment.
$5 Materials Fee. Advance registration is recommended and can be made at AmericanMuralProject.org. Teen Art Studio is made possible in part by Torrington Savings Bank Foundation.

FAMILY DAY: AMPasaurus Rex!
Looking for creative, engaging activities for the whole family? AMP’s Family Days offer an exciting lineup of hands-on activities for children of all ages. Games, story time, art projects, and interactive learning programs spark kids’ curiosity and creativity—and celebrate the art of work. AMP’s Family Days are the perfect way to spend quality time together.
11am – Interactive story time with a dinosaur twist!
12pm – Explore our Dino-sized mural with scavenger hunts and fun activities. We’ll also have a special excavation project where kids use the same skills as an archaeologist to unearth their own dinosaurs!
1pm – Crests, horns, frills, plates, spikes, spines, teeth, claws: when it comes to evolutionary adaptations, dinosaurs are the all-time winners! Students will observe some of the amazing adaptations for themselves, and use their scientific skills to figure out what they were for. Jurassic Classroom’s resident paleontologist Patrick Murphy leads this fun, interactive exploration of actual fossils!

History After Hours: FILM and TALK
Who Were The Wobblies?: Hidden Labor History
This program highlights the story of the Industrial Workers of the World (the “Wobblies”) and their seismic role in labor history. The Wobblies solicited new union members among the most discriminated-against groups of the workforce: unskilled workers, non-whites, immigrants, women, and migrant workers who were barred from the American Federation of Labor, which tended to support white, male, skilled workers. The I.W.W. hoped to create “one big union” through which workers would own the means of production and distribution. Historian Hamish Lutris and author/activist Steve Thornton will lead the discussion following the screening of The Wobblies.

Jazz with JEN ALLEN
Who doesn’t need to unwind after the grind? AMP’s popular Happy Hour Piano Series on the fourth Friday of the month eases you into the weekend with live piano music and libations in Connecticut’s most unique art space.
Jen Allen is a dynamic pianist and composer captivating audiences worldwide with her artistry and creative vision. She frequently performs in venues across New York, the Northeast U.S., and internationally, including appearances at the Litchfield Jazz Festival, Winnipeg Jazz Festival, Greater Hartford Monday Night Jazz Series, and Wexford Performing Arts Centre in Ireland. Jen has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Don Braden, Jimmy Greene, Freddie Hendrix, Camille Thurman, Nat Reeves, and Sarah Caswell. An active recording artist, her discography includes her debut album Pieces of Myself, Sifting Grace, her upcoming release Possibilities, and collaborative projects like Raise Up by Trio 149.

WORKS FOR ME!
Free AMP Admission for Aviation and Aerospace Workers
Through its giant five-story, 120-foot long mural and its accompanying audio tour (available in English and Spanish), AMP tells the story of the everyday American worker. Each month in 2026, this one-of-a-kind exhibit will be offering free admission to honor a different sector of workers who make our communities thrive. AMP’s WORKS FOR ME! free admission will be extended to workers in the aviation and aerospace fields for the month of September 2026.
AMP is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 5pm and Sundays from noon to 5pm. Guests attending with workers who are receiving their respective month’s WORKS FOR ME Free Admission are $15; $12 for seniors and veterans; $5 for students; free for children under 5 or over the age of 100. The English and Spanish language audio tours are included with admission. The Spanish audio tour is made possible with support from Northwest CT Community Foundation, Connecticut Office of the Arts, NBT Bank, and Globe Cleaners.
