Fairfield University and local public schools finish first year of community partnership

Fairfield University Athletics and Fairfield Public Schools have completed the first academic year of a formal community partnership. The initiative integrated university athletics into local public school programming to support elementary students through mentorship and educational enrichment.

The program launched before the 2025–26 academic year and brought NCAA Division I student-athletes into local elementary classrooms. Throughout the year, the university students assisted with academic achievement, physical wellness, and personal growth initiatives across the school district.

Activities varied by location, including classroom reading initiatives, STEM nights, and physical education assistance. At Burr Elementary, student-athletes helped with gym classes, participated in STEM activities, and supported a Jump Rope for Heart pep rally.

Other campuses established targeted programs, such as a yearlong pen pal initiative between Mill Hill Elementary students and the men’s basketball team. Riverfield Elementary hosted weekly visits from the men’s and women’s soccer teams for fitness programming, while Stratfield Elementary organized basketball skill sessions and literacy events.

The collaboration also extended outside of the traditional school day to include the broader community. The partnership organized dedicated PTA Nights hosted at Fairfield University basketball games for local students and their families.

University and school officials noted that the program provided leadership opportunities for the collegiate athletes while giving younger students positive role models. Organizers plan to build on the established foundation to continue and expand the partnership in the upcoming academic years.
