Nathan Hale Homestead invites descendants to upcoming Connecticut family reunion

The Nathan Hale Homestead will host a Hale Family Reunion on Saturday, September 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Connecticut Landmarks museum is inviting individuals who can trace their ancestry to the Coventry Hales, as well as anyone interested in the family’s genealogy. The event offers opportunities to learn about different branches of the family tree, review available genealogical resources, connect with other descendants, and tour the historic house museum.
The gathering marks the 250th anniversary of the completion of the homestead in October 1776, coinciding with the anniversary of the country’s founding. The house has been undergoing significant preservation work, including exterior painting that is scheduled to be completed in July. Organizers are particularly interested in reaching descendants of Nathan Hale’s parents, Richard Hale and Elizabeth Strong, whose family lived in Coventry beginning in the 1740s before many descendants moved west to states like Ohio, Texas, and California in the 1800s.
The weekend itinerary begins Saturday morning with a specialty tour of the Nathan Hale Homestead museum focused on the stories of Richard and Elizabeth Hale and their 10 children who lived to adulthood. A subsequent walking tour of the grounds will examine the family’s farming and homesteading history. Visitors can then have lunch on the grounds and inside the property’s 18th-century barns while participating in Colonial-era games and listening to entertainment provided by the Nathan Hale Fife and Drum.

During the afternoon, participants can take a walking tour of the Coventry Town Green, where the Hale family mustered during the Revolutionary War. The tour includes the former site of the church the family attended, the exterior of the eldest daughter’s home, and the family plot in the Nathan Hale Cemetery, which will feature a salute by the local American Legion. Genealogy experts will remain available to share resources, and Connecticut Landmarks invites visitors to share their own family stories to help build the organization’s historical records.
The event continues into Sunday at 10:00 a.m., when visitors can return to the homestead to explore the Coventry Farmers’ Market. The market, which is the largest farmers’ market in the state, features music, food trucks, product sampling, and various farm and craft stands. Attendees are also encouraged to explore other local attractions, including additional museums managed by Connecticut Landmarks.
The museum is located in Coventry, situated within 30 minutes of Hartford, the University of Connecticut main campus, and Bradley International Airport. Ample on-site parking is available at the property, and the adjacent grounds bordering the Nathan Hale State Forest open at dawn for early exploration.
Tickets can be purchased online through the Connecticut Landmarks website. Admission costs $40 for adults and $20 for children aged 6 to 18, while children under the age of 6 can attend for free. The ticket price covers both the provided lunch and the historic house tours.
