The state of Connecticut is highlighting its historical connection between its Revolutionary War agricultural contributions and its modern food system ahead of upcoming holiday celebrations. As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, the state is recognizing its legacy as the Provision State alongside its historic agricultural operations. This includes Field View Farm in Orange, which was established in 1639 and is believed to be the oldest continuously operated farm and business in Connecticut.
Managed by 12 generations of family stewardship, Field View Farm previously rebuilt its dairy operations following a severe fire in 1997. The historic location continues to serve consumer dairy customers today. The operation serves as an example of the agricultural network that has supported the regional food supply since before the founding of the United States.
Connecticut currently features a 4 billion dollar agricultural sector that includes dozens of multigenerational operations running for over 100, 200, and 300 years. Many of these historic properties engage with the public directly through independent farm stands, pick-your-own fields, and more than 120 organized farmers’ markets across the state. Agriculture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt noted that these long-running farms establish the foundational strength of the state’s local food system.

Local producers are supplying a variety of seasonal items for upcoming summer gatherings, including sweet corn, berries, meats, shellfish, dairy, and fresh vegetables. These seasonal offerings are supported by specific state investments designed to expand public access to local foods and reinforce long-term business viability. Lawmakers continue to fund initiatives aimed at enhancing local agricultural infrastructure, expanding farm-to-school distribution, and increasing processing capacity.
State officials are encouraging residents to integrate local agricultural products into holiday meals and visit regional retail operations this summer. The state maintains a digital directory of verified local producers, farm stands, and public farmers’ markets on the official CTGrown.org website. These coordinated resources are intended to help modern operations reach new markets while meeting local consumer demand.
