Yale project advances error correcting quantum computer with four million dollar grant

A Yale-led research initiative has secured a 4 million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation to advance the development of a large-scale, error-correcting quantum computer. The funding supports the second phase of the ERASE project, which stands for Erasure Qubits and Dynamic Circuits for Quantum Advantage. This new phase follows an initial 1 million dollar pilot grant awarded by the federal agency more than a year ago.

The project relies on the National Quantum Virtual Laboratory, an online collaborative group of experts specializing in computer applications, algorithms, software, and systems architecture. Over the next two years, the research team aims to build a blueprint for the hardware and software required for their quantum computing model. The effort also focuses on expanding the local quantum technology workforce in New Haven.

At the center of the research is a method for addressing computation errors using dual-resonator qubits, which act as erasure flags. Principal investigator Steven Girvin, a physics and applied physics professor at Yale, explained that these specific qubits identify errors right as they occur. This structural design makes processing errors easier to correct compared to existing hardware architectures.

To optimize the error-flag system, the project is drawing on a nationwide network of researchers from physics, computer science, and related disciplines. The team will collaborate across all levels of the system stack to build new algorithms, compilers, software, and error correction protocols. Industry partner D-Wave Quantum, which acquired the Yale start-up Quantum Circuits, Inc. in January, is basing its research and development operations for this project in New Haven.

Michael Hatridge, an associate professor of applied physics at Yale and co-principal investigator, noted that the current phase will expand both research and educational workforce initiatives. The team will establish an interface connecting physical hardware with external researchers studying algorithms and compilation. This phase is designed to culminate in a detailed plan for the actual physical hardware intended for construction during a third phase.

The leadership team includes co-principal investigators Christine Broadbridge of Southern Connecticut State University, Margaret Martonosi of Princeton, and Xiaodi Wu of the University of Maryland. Additional Yale researchers participating in the project include Yongshan Ding, Shruti Puri, and Aleksander Kubica.
