The Ivoryton Playhouse will continue its summer theater season with a production of the Tony Award-winning musical 1776. The Connecticut venue has scheduled the run to begin with preview performances on Thursday, June 25. The official opening night is slated for Friday, June 26, with the production running through Sunday, July 26.

Broadway actor Mark Aldrich will lead the cast in the historic Ivoryton facility. Aldrich’s previous credits include roles in My Fair Lady, Disney’s Newsies, and Ragtime. He is appearing in the regional production through an agreement with the Actors’ Equity Association.

The musical features a book written by Peter Stone, accompanied by music and lyrics composed by Sherman Edwards. The narrative focuses on the Continental Congress during the summer of 1776. The plot specifically follows figures such as John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson as they debate declaring independence from Great Britain.

The production highlights the political bargaining, clashing personalities, and moral contradictions that influenced the founding of the United States. Director Kenn McLaughlin noted that the script addresses topics including race, economic uncertainty, and civil rebellion. Ivoryton Playhouse Executive Producer Ben Hope stated that the story portrays democracy as a complex process argued into existence by imperfect individuals under pressure.

The staging requires a large company for the intimate venue, featuring a cast of 26 professional actors. The production is additionally supported by eight orchestra members and an eight-person design team. The original Broadway production of the show won the Tony Award for Best Musical.

Tickets are currently available for purchase directly through the Ivoryton Playhouse box office by phone or online. General admission is priced at $65 for adults, $60 for seniors, and $25 for students, plus applicable fees. The venue advises patrons to avoid third-party online sellers to ensure accurate pricing and valid ticket purchases.
