Connecticut farmers’ market nutrition program begins June 1 to aid seniors and families

Eligible Connecticut families, seniors, and disabled individuals will gain increased access to fresh, locally grown food starting June 1. Agriculture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt visited the Wethersfield Farmers’ Market to announce the official start of the 2026 Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program.

The initiative uses state and federal funds to provide financial benefits to eligible seniors, disabled individuals under 60 years old, and WIC participants. These participants can use the benefits to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, and cut herbs from certified Connecticut Grown farmers. Certified eggs and honey are also available through the program for senior participants only.

A variety of farmers’ markets across the state accept these benefits. Many locations also coordinate with SNAP and doubling programs to help residents extend their food budgets.

Department of Public Health Commissioner Manisha Juthani, M.D., noted that food insecurity and poor nutrition are connected to chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Juthani stated the program directly addresses these drivers of health outcomes for individuals living on limited incomes.

The program is designed to simultaneously assist the regional agricultural economy by routing customers directly to local growers. According to state officials, the initiative ensures farm products remain within reach for vulnerable residents while providing recognition and business to area farmers.
