Public ceremonies in Norwich will honor patriot John Durkee and USS Confederacy shipwrights

The America’s 250th Norwich CT Committee and the Connecticut Society of the Sons of the American Revolution will host two Liberty Tree dedication ceremonies on Sunday, June 7, 2026. The local events are part of the national commemoration leading up to the 250th anniversary of American Independence on July 4, 2026.

The first ceremony begins at 1:00 p.m. on Bean Hill Green, located at 191 West Town Street. This dedication honors Colonel John Durkee, a prominent local patriot who lived from 1728 to 1782 and is known as “Connecticut’s Bold Man from Bean Hill.” Attendees can find alternate parking at the Courtyard by Marriott Norwich.

The second dedication takes place at 3:00 p.m. at the Leffingwell House Museum. This event recognizes the sailors and shipwrights of the USS Confederacy, a Revolutionary War ship launched from Norwich in 1778 and captured in 1781. The dedication recognizes the maritime contributions, materials, and skilled labor provided by the community during the war.

Both trees are part of the 250th SAR Liberty Tree Program, an initiative by the Sons of the American Revolution to plant 250 trees nationwide. The plantings serve as living tributes to civic courage, liberty, and remembrance.

The public is invited to attend both afternoon events. Each dedication will feature remarks from local officials and SAR representatives, followed by a live musket salute performed by The Connecticut Line CTSSAR.
