Connecticut music competition offers 20K grand prize to world-class young pianists

Zhu Wang, one of the 2025 Grand Prize winners, won the Maria Canals International Piano Competition in Barcelona—an example of how the Heida Hermanns Competition recognizes and elevates emerging talent at pivotal moments in their careers.

Young pianists worldwide have six weeks left to enter one of Connecticut’s premier classical music events. The Museum of Contemporary Art Connecticut has opened its call for entries for the 2026 Heida Hermanns International Music Competition, with a strict application deadline of June 30, 2026.

The global platform is restricted to performers aged 18 to 30 who are ready to establish international careers. A total of $35,000 in prize money is on the line. The top performer wins $20,000 and a solo recital, while the runner-up receives $10,000, and third place takes home $5,000.

To lower financial barriers for traveling musicians, all selected finalists are provided with individual practice pianos, meals, and lodging during their time in the state.

The competition emphasizes contemporary “living music” alongside traditional mastery. Every finalist must deeply engage with modern repertoire by performing a brand-new commissioned work live for local audiences. Past commission selections include Lowell Liebermann’s Nocturne No. 12 and Timo Andres’s Competition.

The track record for recent winners shows the event’s influence as a career accelerator. Artem Kuznetsov, who won in 2022, is currently recording his fourth album with KNS Classical. Ye-Eun Hyun, a 2025 co-grand prize winner, is currently preparing for her upcoming solo recital milestone at the museum.

Musicians must submit their applications and preliminary video performances online via SlideRoom. Institutions, music educators, and young performers are asked to share the details before the final June deadline.

Following the close of applications, the organization will name its finalists on August 15, 2026. The live final round and the formal awards ceremony will be held in Westport on November 14, 2026.
