The Stowe Center for Literary Activism ( 77 Forest St, Hartford, CT 06105 ) presents a Who Is Harriet?, a lecture series exploring the latest scholarship and contemporary impacts of Harriet Beecher Stowe.

Who Is Harriet? is a four-part lecture series that features Stowe scholars and examines Stowe, her contemporaries, and literature from a variety of viewpoints. The lectures highlight the contemporary research and offer diverse perspectives, illuminating the broader context within which Stowe lived and worked. The series will also consider how Stowe is relevant today.

“Stowe was a complex person who was motivated to write for a variety of reasons, not the least to protest the brutality of slavery,” said Cat White, Director of Collections and Public Programs at the Stowe Center. “This lecture series will prompt conversations, deepen thoughts, and expand understandings not only of Stowe but also of the legacy of literary activism.”

The 2025 series is hybrid, with an in-person gathering at the Katharine Seymour Day House on the Stowe Center campus (77 Forest Street, Hartford) and a virtual gathering simultaneously offered over Zoom. The cost for attending is $20 for a ticket only and $35 for admission plus the accompanying book by the lecturing scholar. Virtual attendants will have their books shipped after the event. To register, click here.

The Who is Harriet? dates, presenting scholars, and dates are as follows. Each lecture event runs from 6pm to 7:30pm with time for questions and answers.

  • Wednesday, March 19 (snow date: March 26) – Dr. Joan D. Hedrick on “Life’s Undress Rehearsal”
  • Wednesday, June 4 – Dr. Tess Chakkalakal on “Charles W. Chestnutt’s Reconstruction of Uncle Tom’s Cabin
  • Thursday, September 25 – Dr. Tracey E. Hucks on “The Public Debates of Frederick Douglass and Martin Delany”

She is the author of Solitary Comrade: Jack London and His Work (University of North Carolina Press, 1982) and Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Life (Oxford University Press, 1994) which won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1995. Along with Susan Belasco, she is co-editor of the Oxford Collected Works of Harriet Beecher Stowe, which will produce scholarly editions of the full range of Stowe’s writing, including novels, journalism, travel writing, poetry, and advice columns.

Dr. Tess Chakkalakal is Associate Professor of Africana Studies and English at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME. She is the author of Novel Bondage: Slavery, Marriage, and Freedom in Nineteenth-Century America (Illinois, 2011) which earned the Robert K. Martin Prize for best book on American literature and “a must read” title by Choice. Her latest book is A Matter of Complexion: The Life and Fictions of Charles W. Chesnutt (St. Martin’s Press, 2025). The first season of Chakkalakal’s podcast series “Dead Writers” is available from Maine Public Radio as well as other podcast platforms. Chakkalakal is responsible for preserving the Stowe House in Brunswick, ME, where she met freedom-seeker John Andrew Jackson and penned Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Dr. Tracey E. Hucks is the Victor S. Thomas Professor of Africana Religious Studies, Suzanne Young Murray Professor (Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study). Hucks is the author of Yoruba Traditions and African American Religious Nationalism, (University of New Mexico Press, 2012) which was a finalist for the American Academy of Religion First Book Award and the Journal of Africana Religions Albert J. Dr. Claudia Stokes is Professor of English at Trinity University, San Antonio, TX. Stokes specializes in nineteenth-century American literature. She is the author of several books and numerous articles. Her second book, The Altar at Home: Sentimental Literature and Nineteenth-Century American Religion (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2014), examines the religious contexts and contents of nineteenth-century American sentimental literature, showing how such writers as Harriet Beecher Stowe and Louisa May Alcott actively enlisted and promoted numerous controversial new doctrines; in addition, this book illustrates how sentimental literature significantly influenced several new American religions such as Mormonism and Christian Science. The Altar at Home received Honorable Mention for the Book Prize awarded triennially by the Society for the Study of American Women Writers.
