Who Is Harriet? Lecture series explores impacts of Harriet Beecher Stowe

The Stowe Center for Literary Activism ( 77 Forest St, Hartford, CT 06105 ) presents a Who Is Harriet?, a lecture series exploring the latest scholarship and contemporary impacts of Harriet Beecher Stowe.
Who Is Harriet? is a four-part lecture series that features Stowe scholars and examines Stowe, her contemporaries, and literature from a variety of viewpoints. The lectures highlight the contemporary research and offer diverse perspectives, illuminating the broader context within which Stowe lived and worked. The series will also consider how Stowe is relevant today.
“Stowe was a complex person who was motivated to write for a variety of reasons, not the least to protest the brutality of slavery,” said Cat White, Director of Collections and Public Programs at the Stowe Center. “This lecture series will prompt conversations, deepen thoughts, and expand understandings not only of Stowe but also of the legacy of literary activism.”
The 2025 series is hybrid, with an in-person gathering at the Katharine Seymour Day House on the Stowe Center campus (77 Forest Street, Hartford) and a virtual gathering simultaneously offered over Zoom. The cost for attending is $20 for a ticket only and $35 for admission plus the accompanying book by the lecturing scholar. Virtual attendants will have their books shipped after the event. The Who is Harriet? dates, presenting scholars, and dates are as follows. Each lecture event runs from 6pm to 7:30pm with time for questions and answers.

The Altar at Home received Honorable Mention for the Book Prize awarded triennially by the Society for the Study of American Women Writers.
