The Importance of Being Earnest

Westport Country Playhouse will stage Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest, from October 28 through November 15, as part of its 2025-26 season. This marks the second production in the Playhouse’s six-show lineup running from September through July.

“At long last, The Importance of Being Earnest comes to the Playhouse stage, and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Mark Shanahan, artistic director of Westport Country Playhouse. “Wilde’s comedic masterpiece is clever, mischievous, and downright outrageous, and this production — led by Melissa Rain Anderson and her extraordinary cast and design team — is exactly the kind of laugh-out-loud, sharp-witted fun we need right now.”

The play follows two eligible bachelors who bend the truth in pursuit of love, leading to a cascade of complications, including mistaken identities, secret engagements, a lost handbag, and one very formidable aunt. Known for its larger-than-life characters, Wilde’s signature wordplay, and outrageous humor, the satire skewers love, marriage, and Victorian high society with timeless wit.

The eight-member cast features Kristen Hahn as Cecily Cardew, Anthony Michael Martinez as Algernon Moncrieff, Jan Neuberger as Miss Prism, Christine Pedi as Lady Bracknell, Michael Raver as Jack Worthing, Triney Sandoval as Rev. Canon Chasuble, Mark Silence as Merriman/Lane, and Katy Tang as Gwendolyn Fairfax. Melissa Rain Anderson directs, with James J. Fenton on set design, Annie J. Le on costumes, Alexander Fetchko on lighting, and John Gromada on sound and original music.

The performance schedule includes

Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Wednesday at 2 and 7 p.m.
Thursday at 7 p.m.
Friday at 8 p.m.
Saturday at 3 and 8 p.m.
Sunday at 3 p.m.

Special events include Taste of Tuesdays (Oct. 28), Together at the Table (Oct. 29), Pride Night (Oct. 30), Opening Night (Nov. 1), Sunday Symposium (Nov. 2), Backstage Pass (Nov. 5), Open Captions (Nov. 9), and Thursday TalkBack (Nov. 13).

Single tickets start at $50, with pricing subject to change based on availability. Discounted rates are available for students, seniors, educators, military and first responders, Indigenous peoples, professional playwrights, and groups. Hartford Wolf Pack October Home Games

The Hartford Wolf Pack kick off their home schedule on Friday, October 17, 2025, against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at PeoplesBank Arena.
