Westport Country Playhouse to host free screening of ‘True Justice’ for MLK Day

Westport Country Playhouse will mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a free public screening of the Emmy Award-winning documentary “True Justice: Bryan Stevenson’s Fight for Equality” on Monday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m.

The event is part of Westport’s 20th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and is presented in partnership with The Westport Library, TEAM Westport, Westport Museum for History and Culture and the Westport/Weston Clergy Association.

Following the film, the audience is invited to stay for a discussion with executive producer Trey Ellis of Westport and host Harold Bailey Jr., a Westport Country Playhouse trustee and chair of TEAM Westport. The conversation will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

The 2019 documentary, produced by HBO and Kunhardt Films, earned the Emmy Award for Outstanding Social Issue Documentary, along with a Peabody Award and the National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications’ Vision Award. It chronicles the work of civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson and the Equal Justice Initiative in their fight to bring fairness to the criminal justice system.

Through landmark cases and personal stories, “True Justice” examines the toll of wrongful convictions and harsh sentencing, particularly on poor communities and people of color. The film also documents the opening of the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, dedicated to more than 4,400 African American victims of lynching.

Admission to the screening is free by reservation through the Westport Country Playhouse website or by calling the box office at 203-227-4177. Seating is first come, first served. The film runs 141 minutes and is rated TV-MA.

“True Justice” was produced and directed by Peter Kunhardt, George Kunhardt and Teddy Kunhardt, with Trey Ellis and Peter Kunhardt serving as executive producers.
