Catherine Sollman
Catherine Sollman is a Chicago-based printmaker, painter, and teaching artist. In her work, she explores landscape through the interplay of meditative patterns, lurid colors, and repeated motifs. She also draws on memories of 1980’s video games and her longing for more remote landscapes.
“I love the element of surprise that characterizes monotype and am always excited by the interplay between positive and negative, print and ghost print, stencil and mask. I rely on chance encounters to construct sets of images that evoke an uncanny sense of place,” says Sollman. “For the month of the residency, I plan to start with a series of small monotypes based on my observations during walks on the Weir Farm grounds. I plan to use those to create a varied edition of 4-5 larger woodcut-based monoprints. My ultimate goal is to develop a renewed sensitivity to my own observations and to introduce new components to my visual language that will inform my work going forward.”

Catherine Sollman
Catherine Sollman was born in Wisconsin, moved to Chicago at age 17, and made her first woodcut two years later. She studied studio arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she focused on photography, fiber, and video. After earning her BFA, she returned to printmaking and has been making prints ever since. She works out of her home studio on Chicago’s West Side and is a part-time teaching artist. Her preferred mediums are monotype and relief.
