Artist in Residence Open Studio: January Yoo Cho
January Yoon Cho is an interdisciplinary visual artist working with video, photography, and drawing. Her work intersects with themes of social conformity, feminism, and environmentalism. Cho acts as both the subject and the photographer/videographer in her work, drawing from her own experiences and unveiling hidden aspects that are perceptible yet not immediately visible.
“Having lived in various locations throughout my life, my interest in the relationship with our environments has been significantly shaped. Through my lens, I capture observations of the social and physical landscapes I navigate, adapting and conforming to my surroundings,” says Cho. “My work process involves combining digital drawings with photographs. During the residency, my primary focus is to create new works that capture the essence of the ecosystem at Weir Farm.”
Cho’s artworks have been featured in numerous exhibitions in the US and Europe, receiving favorable reviews from press outlets such as Hyperallergic, Huffington Post, and the Dallas Morning News. Cho’s The Walk Project, received fiscal sponsorship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Cho obtained grants from the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund in Feminist Art and the Puffin Grant in Environmental Art categories. She was a visiting artist at Ringling College of Art and Design and participated in Vermont Studio Center Residency. Cho has taught at Parsons School of Design, New School University in New York, and Hanyang University in Seoul, Korea as a part time faculty. Born in Seoul, Korea, she relocated to the US in 1990 to pursue her art studies. She earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Parsons School of Design. In 2020, Yoon Cho incorporated the name “January” into her artistic identity. She currently lives and works in New York City with her family.

Stop by the Artist-in-Residence Studio between 11:00 and 12:30 on August 24 to meet August artist January Yoon Cho, view her work, and learn more about the Park’s Artist-in-Residence program. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Weir Farm. No registration required.
