Walls empty, hearts full Walls empty, hearts full: Parkville commercial art gallery to close

Parkville Art Gallery, located at 1429 Park Street in Hartford, will close its doors on March 1, 2026. A closing reception, open to the public, will be held at the gallery on Friday, February 20, 2026, from 6pm-9pm.

“We’ve met so many awesome people along the way,” said Gallery Director and artist-in-residence, Miguel Jose Matos. He continues: “We’re thankful that the gallery brought more eyes to local artists, and our only regret is that we won’t be able to offer the opportunity to others in the future.”

Parkville Art Gallery is Connecticut’s largest private commercial art gallery, and event space, dedicated to the exhibition and support of local and regional artists. Since its opening in 2023, the gallery has curated and installed five exhibitions, featuring over 50 local emerging and established artists. Types of art featured in the 4500 square foot space include abstract painting, photography, sculpture, woodworking, blown glass, upcycled art, and portraiture.

Invited artists are charged zero commission on the sale of their work.

In addition to upholding Parkville Art Gallery’s mission of supporting local artists, each exhibit opening has supported Connecticut businesses, with the gallery providing complimentary catering and entertainment to guests.

December’s opening reception for the current exhibit, Focus Shift, brought in over 150 guests. In lieu of admission fees, the gallery team requested that guests bring one non-perishable food item as part of a food drive to benefit Hands on Hartford, a neighboring organization that serves the city’s most vulnerable residents through food access programs. Food donations for Hands on Hartford totaled 127 pounds.

Parkville Art Gallery was created initially as an event space, to generate a stream of revenue that would relieve artists of the financial responsibility that accompanies showing their work. After exploring all available avenues of support, the team at Parkville Art Gallery has concluded that the business model of supporting the gallery through events has proven to be unfeasible given current market conditions.

“Miguel wanted to provide the most he could to artists,” said Amanda Roy, CEO of The Greater Hartford Arts Council. She continues: “Often artists are always the ones carrying the cost. The team at Parkville Art Gallery was trying to change that.”
