UConn Extension guide details how summer yard cleanup prepares home compost systems for fall

As Connecticut gardens peak in July, residents are generating a growing volume of yard waste through plant trimming, lawn mowing, and vegetable bed maintenance. Agricultural experts suggest that mid-summer is an ideal time to establish a home compost system. Starting a pile now helps recycle these current seasonal materials while preparing households for the large volume of leaves that arrives each autumn.
A fact sheet published by UConn Extension, titled How to Get Started with Composting at Home: A Practical Guide, encourages residents to treat composting as a year-round operational system. Beginning the process during the summer months allows gardeners to build an initial foundation of organic matter. This early setup ensures the pile is stable before heavy fall leaf accumulation begins.
Summer yard trimmings, spent flowers, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, and small quantities of grass clippings serve as nitrogen-rich green materials. These items can be balanced by adding carbon-rich brown materials, such as stored dry leaves or shredded cardboard. UConn Extension notes that dry fall leaves are an especially valuable resource for backyard systems because they are abundant and effective at balancing food scraps.
Establishing a home system does not require expensive equipment or complex setups. Homeowners can utilize a basic wire bin, a wooden enclosure, a commercial plastic compost bin, or an open pile. The system simply needs to be placed in a well-drained, accessible location that can be reached easily throughout the dynamic weather changes of the entire year.
Long-term success relies heavily on maintaining a proper balance between green and brown organic inputs. Covering food scraps and fresh yard waste with leaves helps control internal moisture, minimize odors, and prevent issues with common pests. Most residential composting problems can be avoided by maintaining this mixture and strictly omitting items like meat, dairy, oils, and pet waste.
While some specialized piles decompose within a few months, standard backyard systems typically require six months to a full year to produce finished compost. Starting a new pile in July positions local gardeners to have finished organic material available for future planting seasons. Click here for more information.
