Twelve Angry Men Production Features June 17th “Talk-back”

The Town Players of New Canaan are no strangers to plays that touch on contemporary social themes – as witnessed in their recent productions of Rocket Girl and Ordinary People. Similarly, the upcoming staging of Reginald Rose’s Twelve Angry Men will touch on two relevant issues of social import – namely, on the themes of inequality and civic courage.

Written in 1954, Twelve Angry Men is a compelling courtroom drama that follows the deliberations of a jury when a disadvantaged teenager is charged with murdering his abusive father. The drama begins as eleven out of twelve “angry” men vote to sentence the boy to death. One juror, however, is not so sure that the evidence given in the trial points to guilt. Rather, he believes that the prosecution has cleverly manipulated the jury by playing on the unconscious ethnic biases of its members. He is determined to alert those jurors to their prejudices, and see justice done.

Twelve Angry Men, based on the playwright Reginald Rose’s own experience as a juror in a criminal case, has become a theater classic. Its run at the Powerhouse Theatre in Waveny Park will start June 16th and end June 24th.  The matinee performance of June 17th, however,  will feature a very special post-performance event –-a live, on-stage “Talk-back” featuring actor and director Mike Boland along with A.M. Bhatt, who plays Juror # 11 in this production. Mr. Bhatt, besides being an actor, has spent a career in corporate leadership and social impact consulting. In 2022, he founded the Connecticut non-profit, District Arts and Education.  DAE programs provide access to twenty-first century digital career and life skills for high school students and young adults who come from communities that have been historically under-resourced.

For audience members interested in engaging with cast members in a lively discussion of Twelve Angry Men and its implications for the contemporary audience, this is an event not to be missed. Tickets for the show may be purchased for $40 ($35 for seniors, and $25 for students) on the Town Players’ website: https://our.show/12angrymen.
