Tunisia88 Alumni Choir to perform at Yale University’s Battell Chapel on Nov. 2 as part of first-ever U.S. tour

On Sunday, November 2, at 2 p.m., Yale University’s Battell Chapel (400 College St, New Haven, CT 06511) will host a performance by the Tunisia88 Alumni Choir, a groundbreaking ensemble of young musicians whose story began in the aftermath of Tunisia’s 2011 revolution. The concert marks the choir’s first-ever U.S. tour, led by Juilliard-trained pianist and 88 International founder Kimball Gallagher.
The Tunisia88 Alumni Choir grew out of Tunisia88, a nationwide music initiative launched to empower students and promote civic engagement through the arts. Supported by Tunisia’s Ministry of Education and international partners including the U.S. State Department, European Investment Bank, and German Federal Foreign Office, the program established student-run music clubs in all 592 public high schools across Tunisia.
What began as a bold experiment—using music to give young people a voice in post-revolution Tunisia—quickly evolved into a movement that reached every corner of the country. The alumni choir now represents the next generation of that movement, blending original compositions with traditional music from Tunisia, Senegal, and Myanmar, as well as collaborations with university choirs across the U.S., including Yale and Princeton.
Each concert on the tour offers a vibrant mix of multilingual repertoire, featuring songs performed in Tunisian Arabic, Wolof, Burmese, Mandarin, English, and more. The performances showcase the choir’s unique blend of cultural identity and musical innovation, offering audiences a rare cross-cultural experience that bridges continents through sound.
“This tour is my way of bringing it home,” said Gallagher, who founded 88 International in 2015 to expand the reach of Tunisia88’s model worldwide. “As an individual artist, you can teach a few students—but if you want to reach thousands, you need infrastructure, partners, and a shared vision.”

Since its founding, 88 International has brought youth music and leadership programs to Morocco, Senegal, The Gambia, Myanmar, Taiwan, and beyond, engaging more than 200,000 students across the globe. The nonprofit blends music education with civic leadership, helping young people find their voices and build community through creativity.
For Gallagher, the tour represents a full-circle moment—connecting his international work with his roots as an American concert pianist. Following the Tunisia88 Alumni Choir’s East Coast performances, Gallagher will return to Carnegie Hall in April 2026 for his first solo recital there in over a decade, featuring a program inspired by his global journey.
The New Haven concert is part of the Daniel Pearl World Music Days series, which celebrates the power of music to foster unity and understanding across cultures.
