Town Players of New Canaan’s 77th season starts tomorrow tonight with The Fantasticks
The Town Players of New Canaan has consistently exceeded audience expectations of community theater. Shows from its record-breaking 2022-23 season elicited critical praise from Broadway World for “credible, multi-dimensional performances” and “sensitive and skillful” direction. The coming 2023-24 season promises yet more not-to-be-missed productions offering musical theater, family fun, fantasy, and contemporized classical drama.
The season begins with an audience favorite: The Fantasticks, by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt. This most charming and intimate of musicals, which boasted a forty-two year off-Broadway run, still retains its freshness and romance. It is back by popular demand. The show opens at The Powerhouse Theatre in Waveny Park, New Canaan, on August 26th, and continues weekends through September 10th.
From October 13th -28th, cult camp meets comic book heroics at The Powerhouse Theatre, where The Town Players will feature a production of The Toxic Avenger: The Musical, by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan. This contemporary, environmentally-themed romp is bound to get audiences in the right mood for Halloween night celebrations!
December’s seasonal offering will be a family classic — Philip Grecian’s A Christmas Story. An adaptation of a much loved movie from the early 1980s, this play is based on humorist Jean Shepherd’s semi-autobiographical stories about growing up in the Midwest. Then Puffs, by Matt Cox, follows in late February and early March – a delightful theatrical parody on the wildly famous, bespectacled boy wizard whose book series must not be named!
The 2023-24 season rounds up with some phantasmic poetry and myth: first, an April staging of Alice’s Adventures, based on Lewis Carroll’s novels; then, June performances of Eurydice, Sarah Ruhl’s new and exquisite reimagining of the Orpheus legend, told from the perspective of Eurydice, his wife.
