Following an extensive four-year renovation catalyzed by a $160-million philanthropic gift, the Yale Peabody Museum will reopen to the public on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, bringing the story of natural and human history to a new generation of school children, university students, and communities across Connecticut.
“Whether you have been coming to the Peabody for decades or have just discovered us for the first time, we want you to feel welcome, excited and inspired from the moment you walk through the doors,” said David Skelly, Director of the Yale Peabody Museum.
In addition to now being free for all visitors, the new and improved Peabody also boasts increased gallery space, remounted and reposed fossils of dinosaurs and prehistoric mammals, expanded research and classroom space for Yale University students, upgraded facilities for K-12 class trips, and critical updates for a more accessible and engaging visitor experience.
Many of the Peabody’s more cherished specimens, like the first Brontosaurus, Stegosaurus and Triceratops ever discovered, have been dramatically redisplayed based on the university’s latest research. And while the more than 150-year-old Peabody is best known for its dinosaur and prehistoric fossil collections, its cultural, anthropological and science exhibitions have been extensively expanded to make room for never-before displayed artifacts and contemporary art.
Founded in 1866, the Yale Peabody Museum is one of the world’s oldest and largest university museums of its kind. Home to over 14 million objects and specimens across 10 distinct collections, it preserves and displays more than four billion years of Earth and human history.
