The Stonington Borough Merchants Association is hosting its one-day outdoor art fair, the Sixth Annual Art Walk, to include more than 80 artists with music and food. The Art Walk, free to the public, will take place Saturday, September 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a rain/wind date of Sunday, September 15, and is expected to attract artists and visitors from across New England. The Stonington Village Improvement Association is the event’s marquee sponsor.
Water Street between High Street and Church Street will be closed for the day to accommodate the event. Painters, illustrators, watercolorists, sculptors, potters, and photographers will line the street with tents. Artists will be tucked into courtyards and placed at storefronts stretching down to Cannon Square. New this year are additional food vendors, artists painting en plein air on Wadawanuck Square, and a play at the Lighthouse Museum.
“We’re thrilled with the caliber of talent and scope of activities this year, said Sandra Alexander, event promoter and marketing/design lead for the Stonington Borough Merchants Association. “Showcasing our community’s deep pool of creative and cultural assets, and welcoming visitors to our beautiful, historic seaside village is what makes this event so special.”
Affiliated activities will take place in support of the Art Walk:
- Historic Stonington and Connect To Create are presenting The Triad and the Map – A Play by Jessica Cerullo. The 30-minute performance takes place in the air-conditioned second-floor gallery of the Stonington Lighthouse. Showtimes are 10, 11, 12, 1, 2, and 3. Tickets are $10 and inclusive of admission to the historic Lighthouse Museum. Tickets may be booked in advance. Suitable for ages 14+.
- Stonington Free Library, open 10 am – 3 pm on the day of the Art Walk, will host artist Leonardo Jara and distribute free project kits for artists painting en plein air on Wadawanuck Square on September 14, while supplies last. A “Storywalk” created by Maggie Spadaro featuring images from her children’s book will be on display in their Stairwell Gallery through September 27. The Love Where You Read Art Contest will be kicking off on September 16.
- The James Merrill House (107 Water Street) will be exhibiting Fans and Clouds and Bats: The Story in their Visitor’s Center, detailing the extravagantly weird, hand-printed wallpaper named “Summer Palace” installed on the third-floor parlor.
- Cove Ledge Beer, Wine and Spirits will host a group of artists in its backyard garden (147 Water Street) and offer free tastings during the Art Walk.
- Jeffrey Earls of JWilderArt and Elizabeth Belliveau will be exhibiting at the House of Randall at 145 Water Street.
- September 6 through October 31, La Grua Center (32 Water Street) will feature local LGBTQ+ artists from OUTCT which is celebrating 10 years of Coming Out for Art! La Grua will be open to the public during the Art Walk from 10 am – 2 pm for a suggested donation of $5. The exhibit runs through the end of October.
- The Velvet Mill will be exhibiting “ON THE SPOT: Live sketches, studies, and quick mixed media works” in its upstairs gallery, a show featuring works by current Velvet Mill artists. The show opens Friday, September 6 with a reception from 5 – 8 pm and runs through October 8.
- The Park Place Artists, a group of 8-10 art students, will be exhibiting at 165 Water Street.
- The Glaze Vase Project returns to the Sixth Annual Art Walk thanks to local potter and Art Walk participant, Lyndsay Meiklem Dean of Glaze Handmade. Lyndsay will be hiding 30 tiny swirl vases throughout the Borough for seekers to find on September 14.
- Marya Ursin of Mystic Paper Beasts, a theater troupe known for their extraordinary collection of expressive mythological masks and ingenious props, will be roving throughout the event.
“I look forward to participating in Art Walk every year,” said Lyndsay Meiklem Dean. “It’s a wonderfully organized event in a quintessential coastal village and I’m always honored to be among such incredible artists on a street filled with small businesses! I’m excited to be giving away 30 bud vases as part of The Glaze Vase Project this year, they will be tucked into public spaces for seekers to find throughout the Borough and the joy it brings me to share my work in this way and hear the stories of folks finding them is one of my favorite parts about the annual event!
Food
In addition to the Borough’s restaurants, there will be food vendors in Wadawanuck Square (22 High Street) including Zest Fresh Pastry, Morsel Dumplings, Dude’s Donuts, Gio’s on the Go, Lemon Twist, and Wakin’ Up Waggin’.
Music
This year’s event will feature a performance by Ashley Jones Violin Student Orchestra at Wadawanuck Square at 2 pm in addition to pop-up performances along Water Street featuring classical and folk artists throughout the day.
