Summer Student Art Exhibition
The Norwalk Art Space is thrilled to announce its Summer Student Art Exhibition, featuring an extraordinary collection of works created by talented students ages 12-18 years old. This special event will take place on August 15th, from 5-7 pm, at The Norwalk Art Space, offering families and the community an opportunity to view these
inspiring works of art.
The exhibition showcases a diverse range of projects from free summer art classes and workshops, taught by The Norwalk Art Space 2024-25 Resident Artists and visiting teachers, including:
● Expression through Medium Exploration – Resident Artist Sain’t Phifer encouraged students to discover their unique voices and stories in the vibrant world of mixed-media art, including acrylic paint, charcoal, cardboard, and even clothing!
● Studio Ghibli Fantasy-Scapes – Inspired by Studio Ghibli’s enchanting worlds, Resident Artist Emily Curran introduced students to animation and landscape painting, helping them to create imaginative works that transported them to new realms.
● Character Design – Students learned how to create figures of all shapes and sizes and were introduced to the work of popular illustrators and animators as Resident Artist Viviane Rivas helped them to develop their own original characters.
● Self-Portraits Using Symbolism – Working from mirrors, meaningful objects, reference pictures, and inspiration from Resident Artist Samantha Cosentino, each young artist explored the art of self-representation, creating drawings and paintings to express their unique personal identity.
● Exploring Your Identity Through Excess – Teaching Korry Fellow Paige Mostowy led students in an artistic exploration of ready-made sculpture and abstract art through the use of multiples, creating artwork that explores object association, experimentation, arrangement, and form.
● Just Glue it! Assemblage Workshop – Using paint and repurposed materials such as fabric, beads, buttons, wire, etc., with instruction from Educational Coordinator Emily Teall and visiting artist Nina Bentley, students transformed familiar objects into playful sculptures that expressed a small piece of themselves.
● Empowering Voices – Visiting artist MaryJo McGonagle encouraged students to express their thoughts and emotions to promote their confidence, using printmaking techniques, such as Gelli plates, block printing, and collage.
“The exhibition promises to be an inspiring showcase of creativity and talent, highlighting the hard work and dedication of the young artists who participated in this summer’s program,” said Executive Director Duvian Montoya. “Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artists, discuss their works, and gain insights into the creative process behind each piece.”
