The Mark Twain House & Museum, located at 351 Farmington Avenue in Hartford, CT, announced today its participation in Museums for All, a signature access program of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), administered by the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM), to encourage people of all backgrounds to visit museums regularly and build lifelong museum-going habits.

The Museums for All program supports those receiving food assistance (SNAP) benefits visiting The Mark Twain House & Museum for a reduced fee of $3.00 per person, up to four people, with the presentation of a SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card starting July 17. The museum will offer this discount on the General Mark Twain House Tour offered throughout the day every day and on Growing up in the Gilded Age, a special tour for children and families offered daily at 10:45am through the months of July and August. Museums for All is part of The Mark Twain House & Museum’s broad commitment to seek, include, and welcome all audiences.

Growing Up in the Gilded Age Tour

What was it like to learn, play, and grow up in The Gilded Age? In this special hour-long interactive tour, young visitors explore the everyday lives of the Clemens daughters — the books, games, and songs they loved, the subjects they studied, and the people they interacted with. Led by an experienced guide, this inquiry-based tour invites children to think about the ways that childhood and family life in the Gilded Age were similar and different to their own. Offered daily at 10:45am during the months of July and August, this tour is best suited for children ages 4-10; to best serve young visiors and fully explore the experience of childhood in this home, the tour does not include the house’s third floor.

To enjoy the discount, SNAP participants should present their EBT card at the museum’s ticket desk to receive the discount. The museum is open seven days a week from 9:30am to 5:30pm, with the final tour of the day stepping off at 4:15pm. Please note schedule is subject to change and tour availability is based on a first-come/first-served basis. Please note that the Museums for All program discount cannot be applied on specialty tours such as Living History Tours, Graveyard Shift Ghost Tours, or Get a Clue Murder-Mystery Tours.

The Mark Twain House & Museum is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, The Mark Twain Foundation, The Hartford, Connecticut Department of Economic Development/Office of Tourism, Travelers, and the Greater Hartford Arts Council. The museum receives media support from Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network.
