The Maritime Aquarium Mourns Death of Harbor Seal Polly
It is with a heavy heart that The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk announces the death of harbor seal Polly.
Director of Animal Husbandry Rachel Stein said: “It is always difficult when we lose an animal, and Polly was so special, both to our staff and to our guests. She had such a wonderful, sweet personality, even in her older age. She touched the hearts of so many people during her time, and her presence will be deeply missed.”
Following a recent decline in her health, Polly died on June 12 at 37 years old. The Aquarium’s Animal Husbandry team worked tirelessly with veterinarian staff and world leaders in harbor seal care to support her and keep her comfortable during this difficult time.
Polly, born at Mystic Aquarium, had been a part of The Maritime Aquarium’s seal population since 1990 – identifiable to guests by the heart-shaped birthmark on her chest. She was known by her trainers for her sassy and curious personality, many of which began their careers with her.
Aquarium Veterinarian Dr. Charles Duffy said: “Having worked with Polly for over 20 years, I am greatly saddened by this loss. She was a beautiful seal with an endearing personality. Her age is a testament to the excellent care she received throughout her life.”
Trainer Marisa Miloro said: “I feel grateful and lucky that Polly chose me to be her trainer for 7 years – we had a very special connection. I will always remember her and carry with me the lessons she taught me early in my career.”
The average life expectancy for harbor seals in human care is 25 years old. The Aquarium’s population – excluding Sono, 1 – is considered geriatric with an average age of 32. Polly’s death follows the deaths of harbor seals Ariel, 33, and Tillie, 37, in late 2023.
