MOM UPDATES: The Photographs by Bruce George Wingate

MOM UPDATES is a selection of photographs by Bruce George Wingate, “originally known as the cutest member of the influential 1980’s New Jersey hardcore punk band Adrenalin O.D.”. The exhibition takes place at The Gallery at Still River Editions in Danbury from January 13th through March 29th, 2024. There is an opening reception on Saturday, January 13th from 2 pm – 4 pm (with a snow date of January 20th) with art, conversation, and light refreshments. The event and exhibition are free. The images will also be available online for viewing after the opening.
A longtime Danbury resident, Wingate moved to Central Florida in 2017 to become a caregiver to his late mother, Grace. He began to document brief conversations with her on social media, accompanied by photos of their daily activities. Many of the photographs are candid, and Grace is viewed from behind, caught in the act of shopping.
Wingate’s photographs blend documentary portraiture and the American landscape, in the tradition of photographers such as William Eggleston. Grace was aware of the internet following she acquired through Bruce’s Facebook posts, and would occasionally address the camera directly. The images are wry, but filled with the warmth of affection. The repetition of locations and compositional choices in the photographs is part of their appeal.
In 2020, Marc Fisher of Public Collectors press in Chicago (best known for the book series Hardcore Architecture) published a two-color Risograph chapbook of MOM UPDATES with Grace’s full consent. A copy of the book is now in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art’s Library.
In his artist statement, Wingate quotes Grace saying, “I’m one tough cookie.” Mrs. Wingate died in November of 2022, and Bruce recently moved back to Fairfield County.
Before relocating to Florida, Bruce was a member of numerous Connecticut bands including The International Brunch Mummies, New Reagans, The Earls of Sandwich and District Allstarz.
MOM UPDATES will be on view during business hours through March 29th, 2024. The images will also be available online for viewing after the opening.
