The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is pleased to present a Feminist Salon and Spell Jar Workshop hosted by the feminist artist collective Hilma’s Ghost on Saturday, December 2 from 2 to 5 pm. Click here to purchase tickets.

This workshop will center Enchantments: Bottled Devotionals of Divine Feminine Spirits, an apothecary box containing 12 glass spell jars each dedicated to a deity, saint, or an artist made for the 2023 Aldrich Box series. From 2 to 3:30 pm Hilma’s Ghost will give a brief introduction to the history of the spiritual in art followed by an activation of the apothecary box, unleashing its magical potential through the divine channeling of one of the deities, saints, or artists included inside.

Following the activation of Hilma’s Ghost’s Aldrich Box, the artist collective will lead a workshop from 3:30 to 5 pm, where participants will get to create their own spell jars. A spell is a way to bring one’s thoughts and intentions into the physical realm using chosen objects and materials. Materials for the session will be provided.

Hilma’s Ghost’s Aldrich Box, Enchantments: Bottled Devotionals of Divine Feminine Spirits, is the third and final Box in the 2023 Aldrich Box series, a year-long traveling exhibition unbound to a physical space. This year’s edition focuses on performance—underscoring the cooperative and interdisciplinary aspects of making art. Artists have been invited to create work(s) contained inside individualized Aldrich Boxes and accompanied by a live performance to be presented at the Museum. Members of the public are invited to borrow one at a time for up to a week free of charge. Hilma’s Ghost’s Aldrich Box will be available to check out starting on November 19, 2023 through March 3, 2024. The box contains 12 spell jars, an instruction manual with a list of attributes, ritual objects, brief historical information, and an incantation on offer to activate. Hilma’s Ghost, a feminist artist collective, was co-founded by Brooklyn-based artists Sharmistha Ray (they/them) and Dannielle Tegeder (she/her) three years ago during the height of the pandemic. Their namesake Hilma af Klint’s groundbreaking exhibition at the Guggenheim in 2018 served as a reckoning for art history’s blindspots, especially for women artists considered too ‘mystical’ for the conservative art world. Hilma’s Ghost believes that western heteropatriarchal societies’ false binary between spirituality and science has served to overlook women artists whose explorations of ancient and pre-modern knowledge systems is a source of personal strength and aesthetic innovation. The collective acts as a restorative project that uplifts the voices of women, trans, and nonbinary artists using abstraction and mysticism in their work and makes them visible.

Aldrich Box and the related programs are organized by Director of Education Namulen Bayarsaihan and Chief Curator Amy Smith-Stewart.
