The Avon Historical Society invites the public to TABLESCAPES, an event showcasing up to 30 creative and original table settings on Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16 from 10:00am to 5:00pm at the historic North House, 1 Nod Road, Avon, Connecticut.
This creative event, opening just in time for Spring, will feature themed table settings from local professional designers, florists, businesses, individuals, artists and others featuring fresh floral arrangements, centerpieces and accessories. Attendees will find new themes to use for their own decorating or for their holiday tables. First, second, third place and honorable mention prizes will be awarded to the exhibitors based on the votes by those who attend. The displays will be set up around the Belle Ballroom of the historic North House, a former colonial-era Inn on the Providence-Albany Turnpike, which today is Route 44. The Forge Room of the restaurant was built in 1832 by Joseph North as a blacksmith shop.
Back by popular demand will be a “Tableware Tag Sale” on both days! The tag sale will feature gently used, antique and/or vintage dishes, platters, bowls, glassware, barware, silverware, casserole dishes, baking dishes and baking supplies, all priced to sell, with proceeds benefiting the Avon Historical Society.
Admission to TABLESCAPES includes the tag sale. Pre-event tickets are $15.00 per person or $20.00 at the door. Tickets can be purchased online at www.avonhistoricalsociety.org or by calling Mary Harrop at 860-670-3225 before March 12th.
“This is our fifth TABLESCAPES and we welcome new and returning local artisans, gardeners, decorators and residents who will show off their talents with gorgeous themes and ideas,” said Mary Harrop, co-chair of the event.
The proceeds of this year’s event will benefit the ongoing renovations of the one room schoolhouse at 8 East Main Street (Route 44), just half-mile west of the North House which will become the Avon History Museum later this year. This Federal/Greek revival style schoolhouse, listed on the State Register of Historic Places, is the oldest building owned by the Town of Avon. It is being renovated into a modern museum of Avon’s history keeping the footprint of the original building intact. The schoolhouse was relocated from Country Club Road in 1982 to make room for the current Avon Free Public Library. The building is across Route 44 from daCapo’s Restaurant, on the site of the 19th century Farmington Canal. It was leased to the Avon Historical Society in 1980 for 99 years with the understanding it would be used as a museum of local history. It was closed in 2012 due to much needed renovations. Since 2019, the Society and Town of Avon, have been upgrading it to allow for a secure, safe and appropriate environment for storage of artifacts in the lower level. The main floor will be the museum room showcasing items from the Society’s rich collection. In addition, the Society plans to include information about the Brian D. Jones Paleo-Indian site discovered in 2019 along the Farmington River in Avon. This 12,500-year-old archaeological find of over 18,000 artifacts and structures is the oldest known human occupation site in Southern New England. The new Avon History Museum is planned to open later this year in time for the 200th anniversary of the first class of students who studied there as well as the 50th anniversary of the Avon Historical Society.
Sponsorships for this event are at various levels and will be recognized on a lobby sign at the event and in the program booklet. For more information about TABLESCAPES, or to be a sponsor or to buy tickets, please contact the co-chair of the event, Mary Harrop at 860-670-3225.
