Strong Elite Field for Faxon Law New Haven 20K – 5,000 expected to run on Labor Day
As host of the USA Men’s and Women’s 20K Championship, Faxon Law New Haven Labor Day Road Race features one of their best elite fields to date. This year’s race features 2 U.S. Olympians and the women’s course record holder. 5,000 runners are expected to join these top runners.
Virginia’s Keira D’Amato heads the women’s field. She won the Faxon Law New Haven 20K in 2022 and set the course record. D’Amato will race some tough competition at this year’s race. Phoenix’s Jess Mcclain was 4th at this year’s Olympic Trials Marathon. Flagstaff’s Rachel Smith represented the US in the Tokyo Olympics in the 5,000 meters and was this year’s 15K national champion.
The men’s field is also very strong. Colorado’s Hilary Bor (2016 US Olympian Steeple Chase) and Sam Chelanga (finished 5 times in the top 3 in the Faxon Law New Haven 20K). Colorado’s Anthony Rotich, set a 10,000 personal best of 27:08 this year, should also finish near the top. Flagstaff’s Biya Simbassa, 4th in last year’s Faxon Law New Haven 20K, is also expected to run with the leaders.
The female and male 20K winners will receive the Ryan Shay Memorial Award. Ryan passed away while participating in the 2007 Olympic Trials Marathon in New York City. The award is in recognition of Ryan’s hard work and dedication to the sport, as well as longtime support of the New Haven Road Race. Ryan ran the 20K for four years from 2004-2007 and placed 1st in 2004.
“We’re very excited about having many of the country’s top runners compete in New Haven,” said John Tolbert, Elite Athlete Coordinator. “We have very deep Men’s and Women’s race fields. With a cool day, the men’s and women’s 20K American records could be in jeopardy.”
This year’s race features a prize purse of nearly $40,000 and will be held on Labor Day on the New Haven Green. This year’s event begins with the Kids Run at 8:10 a.m. and is followed by the half marathon, 20K, 5K and half marathon relay at 8:30 a.m. A crowd of 5,000 runners are expected to participate in the event. The New Haven Road Race would not be possible without the support of the title sponsor Faxon Law Group. Other contributing sponsors include McDermott Lexus, ACES, Pebbles Toy Store, Town Fair Tire, Corsair, Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists and the City of New Haven.
