Stamford History Center hosts 6th annual July 4 Independence Day reading

The Stamford History Center will host its 6th Annual Declaration of Independence Day Reading on the steps of Stamford’s oldest home, the Hoyt-Barnum House (1508 High Ridge Road), adjacent to the former Martha Hoyt School.

The event begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 4, with Stamford History Center board member Rick Petersen returning in character as General Putnam to kick things off. Judy Aronin reprises her role as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, delivering the iconic Seneca Falls speech, while Marvin Pittman returns as Frederick Douglass, reading two of his historic speeches—including one delivered during Douglass’s visit to Stamford. (The History Center holds an original event ticket in its archives.)

Costumes are provided by Sophia’s Costumes and Gifts in Cos Cob, and Melissa McGuire, cabaret performer, will sing the National Anthem.

In keeping with the event’s mission to celebrate freedom in all its forms—not just within the context of Colonial America—the program includes voices from across American history. As part of the tradition, Petersen visits Stamford’s Government Center ahead of the event, in full colonial attire, to invite Mayor Caroline Simmons and Town Clerk Lyda Ruijter to attend.
