Gregory Alan Isakov aimed to strip things down to the bare essentials on Appaloosa Bones, the latest album from the Colorado-based singer. In terms of arrangement, the desire to maintain simplicity marks a sharp contrast from his Grammy-nominated 2018 release, Evening Machines.
Isakov explains that his intention was to create a record that was stripped down to its core. He aimed to go back to basics, as Evening Machines had been a thorough exploration of complex arrangements. With this release, he wanted to provide a more authentic and unfiltered experience.
Isakov played most of the instruments on Appaloosa Bones himself, recording in a tucked-away barn studio on his Colorado property. In his spare time, he grows produce for local restaurants, CSA members, and a food bank. The resulting album is intimate and quiet, albeit with more instrumentation than Isakov had originally envisioned. The eleven songs feature rich vocal harmonies and intricate layers of guitar, banjo, piano, and other keyboards, with a few even including a classic repeating chorus – a unique addition to Isakov’s music.
“I’m always the campfire song ruiner,” he says, laughing. “I love a chorus, I’m a huge pop music fan, but I don’t usually think of songs like verse-chorus-bridge. They’re sort of just a ride, you know? I hope they take the listener some place different than where they started.”
That’s surely part of what has endeared him to both fans and critics, who have gravitated toward what NPR Music calls his “emotionally evocative songwriting style” ever since his first studio album, 2007’s That Sea, the Gambler. Born in South Africa, Isakov immigrated with his family to Philadelphia in 1986. After horticulture school in Boulder, he settled down in Colorado and began making music, including This Empty Northern Hemisphere (2009), The Weatherman (2013), and a 2016 album he recorded with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
