Seventh Annual Stonington Borough Art Walk set for Sept. 13

The Stonington Borough Merchants Association is hosting its one-day outdoor art fair, The Seventh Annual Art Walk, to include more than 60 artists from New England, with a special focus on Stonington artists. The Art Walk, free to the public, will take place Saturday, September 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a rain/wind date of Sunday, September 14, and is expected to attract visitors from across the region. The Stonington Village Improvement Association and Water Street Design Associates are the event’s platinum sponsors.
Water Street between High Street and Church Street will be closed for the day to accommodate the event. Artists from ten genres, including pottery, illustration, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, and woodworking, will line the street with tents, with artists tucked into courtyards and placed at storefronts.
“One of the many reasons Stonington Borough is a state-designated cultural district is this event, and the talented artists and makers who show up for it, said Sandra Alexander, event promoter and marketing/design lead for the Stonington Borough Merchants Association. “Showcasing our community’s deep pool of creative and cultural assets, set against the backdrop of our beautiful, historic seaside village, is what makes this event so special.”
Affiliated activities will take place in support of the Art Walk:
- The Park Place Artists, a group of 8-10 art students, will be exhibiting at 165 Water Street.
- Marya Ursin of Mystic Paper Beasts, a theater troupe known for their extraordinary collection of expressive mythological masks and ingenious props, will be roving throughout the event, offering wishes to visitors.
- The Glaze Vase Project returns to the Seventh Annual Art Walk thanks to local potter and Art Walk participant, Lyndsay Meiklem Dean of Glaze Handmade. Lyndsay will hide 20 tiny vases throughout the Borough for seekers to find.
- September 12 through October 29, La Grua Center (32 Water Street) in partnership with Expressiones Cultural Center will present Echoes in Motion, an exhibition by Verónica Ximénez, María Vargas, & Carlos Garrett. This show, featuring three interdisciplinary artists from Guadalajara, Mexico, invites reflection on the rhythms of nature, the fluidity of memory, and the dynamic interplay between tradition and technology. La Grua will be open to the public during the Art Walk from 10 am – 2 pm for a suggested donation of $5.
- Stonington Free Library will be open 10 am – 3 pm on the day of the Art Walk, featuring an exhibit by artist (and Art Walk participant) Adrienne Pratt of Ship Shape Shop, and the 2025 LOVE Where You Read PHOTO Contest. Photographers ages 15+ may submit up to 2 images for a chance to win cash prizes and be featured on the SFL’s NEW library cards and displayed in the SFL Stairwell Gallery. Also, don’t miss sculptor Doug Rice on Wadawanuck Square. On Sunday, September 14, at 5 pm, photographer David Hendley will be presenting his work and discussing his approach to photography and how he captures the subtle, powerful beauty of nature.
- The James Merrill House, a national historic landmark and former residence of James Ingram Merrill (107 Water Street), will be open for tours on the day of the Art Walk, where visitors will get to explore the apartment where Merrill lived and worked. The Visitor’s Center will also be open.
“Talented is right,” said attendee Rosemary Sisco. “This is a wonderful annual event!”
Food
In addition to the Borough’s restaurants, Zest Fresh Pastry will be serving crepes in the courtyard on Grand Street, next to Maggie Lee Designs (and Art Walk featured artist, Deidre Corcoran).
