Richard Blade brings his iconic energy to College Street Music Hall

On February 26th, the legendary Richard Blade took the stage at College Street Music Hall as the Master of Ceremony for an unforgettable night featuring ABC and Howard Jones. As soon as he walked out, it was clear that the night wasn’t just about the music—it was about celebrating an era, a movement, the vast history of Alternative/New Wave music, and the man who helped define it for generations of fans.
Growing up in Connecticut as a New Wave fan, the only commercial station available was WLIR—and later WDRE—broadcasting from Long Island. While many college stations played similar music, WLIR always had it first, making it the go-to source for discovering the latest sounds.
When I moved from Connecticut to Los Angeles in my twenties, it was Richard Blade’s voice that welcomed me to what would become my home for the next decade. For those of us who grew up immersed in the golden age of New Wave and synth-pop, Blade is more than just a DJ—he’s a living legend.

From his iconic days at KROQ in Los Angeles to his current role on SiriusXM’s 1st Wave (Channel 33), Blade has been the voice of the ‘80s, championing the artists and bands that shaped a generation. His passion for music is unmatched, and his ability to connect with audiences—both on-air and in person—is what has made him such an enduring and beloved figure.
Blade’s introduction of the night’s artists was infused with personal anecdotes, deep admiration, and an infectious enthusiasm that had the audience hanging on his every word. He didn’t just introduce ABC and Howard Jones—he gave context, sharing the impact these artists and so many others have had on the music world and on the fans who still cherish their songs today. His love for the music is genuine, heartfelt, and unwavering, making the crowd feel like they were part of something truly special.

Beyond his legendary radio career, Blade has been a driving force in keeping New Wave alive and thriving. His work on SiriusXM’s 1st Wave has given longtime fans a place to relive the music they love, while introducing a new generation to the bands that defined the sound of the ‘80s. His book, World in My Eyes, is a fascinating look into his life and career, filled with incredible stories of his time in the industry. He’s not just a DJ—he’s a historian, an ambassador, and a passionate fan himself.
Seeing and meeting Richard Blade in person was an absolute joy. His presence at College Street Music Hall elevated the entire evening, bringing a sense of nostalgia, authenticity, and pure love for the music that made the night feel all the more special. He is a true icon, and having him guide the audience through an incredible evening of music was the perfect reminder of why he’s been such an essential part of the New Wave movement for over four decades.
For those lucky enough to be there, it wasn’t just a concert—it was a history lesson, a celebration of an era, with Richard Blade at the helm, leading us back to the music, the memories, and the magic.
