Review: An Intimate Evening of Songs and Stories with Suzanne Vega
My name is Luka; I live on the second floor – with those words, most people worldwide hear Suzanne Vega’s voice in their head; I know I do. And like many of us, I associate many of her songs with different times and events in life. “Marlene on the Wall,” for example, brings me right back to a breakup in my early 20s with my then live-in girlfriend of five years… and having to adjust to living alone in Los Angeles. Most of us have such songs that bring us to a time and a story in our head. But what makes the show An Intimate Evening of Songs and Stories with Suzanne Vega so special is that now we get to hear where the songs take her in her head, why she wrote them, and what exactly they mean to her.
I had the privilege of attending this show at the historic Wall Street Theater in Norwalk, CT, and it was an amazing experience. The beauty, architecture, and layout of this historic gem of a venue is the first thing you notice. Although originally built and used in the early part of the last century for vaudeville and stage acts, later in its life it found use as a movie theater. I remember seeing The Nightmare on Elm Street in that very theater as a teen. Then, a number of years ago, it was renovated and brought back to its historical landmark glory days. With amazing sound and lighting, this intimate venue was perfect for this show.
Vega’s performance was nothing short of mesmerizing, weaving tales through her soulful songs in a cozy setting that allowed for a deep connection with the audience. Stories from her teenage years as a camp counselor in the Adirondacks that eventually led her to a crush and the “rolling around in the wet grass” down near the boat house with a male counselor. The experience ultimately was responsible for two songs by Vega, including “In Liverpool.” Many stories, and the songs they inspired, were shared by Vega during the 2+ hour event. It was a very special and memorable night.
Suzanne Vega is an excellent storyteller. Whether through her music or in spoken word to an audience of eager listeners, her stories are accompanied by her rich, evocative voice, truly transporting us to another world – a world of Vega’s own making inside her head… a world of her memories and their songs. Whether you are a fan of Vega or not, if you have the opportunity to witness Suzanne Vega live, and specifically her current songs and stories show, don’t miss it—it’s an evening filled with pure musical and emotional delight.
