Litchfield Historical Society recently announced Catherine Keene Fields received The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) Award of Excellence of Individual Achievement, the highest honor for achievement in the preservation of state and local history.

Catherine Keene Fields is a rare example of a person who has dedicated the bulk of her career to the development and success of one institution, the Litchfield Historical Society. In so doing, she has offered the field an example of a successful story of slow and steady growth in both the professionalization of an organization and its budget.

Under Cathy’s leadership, the Society has produced award winning exhibits, websites, and publications; created online publicly accessible collection description from an in‐house item level card catalog; and won competitive grants from NEH, IMLS, NHPRC, CLIR, Connecticut Humanities, and other federal, local, and state grant agencies and private foundations. Cathy has cultivated a place for the Historical Society within the local community, as well as contributed to the museum community in Connecticut and beyond, having served on the Connecticut League of History Organizations board; volunteered for AASLH; the Connecticut Humanities Board, and many others.

This year, AASLH is proud to confer 53 national awards honoring people, projects, exhibits, and publications. The winners represent the best in the field and provide leadership for the future of state and local history.

The AASLH awards program was initiated in 1945 to establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history throughout the United States. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards not only honor significant achievement in the field of state and local history, but also bring public recognition of the opportunities for small and large organizations, institutions, and programs to make contributions in this arena. For more information about the Leadership in History Awards, contact AASLH at 615-320-3203, or go to www.aaslh.org.

The Litchfield Historical Society is located at 7 South Street, Litchfield, CT.
