Real Art Ways to Present Connecticut Premiere of A Double Life

On Saturday, May 17 at 5:30 p.m., Real Art Ways (56 Arbor St, Hartford, CT 06106) will host the Connecticut premiere of A DOUBLE LIFE, a powerful new documentary from director Catherine Masud, assistant professor-in-residence at the University of Connecticut’s Department of Digital Media & Design and the Gladstein Family Human Rights Institute.
Following the screening, Masud will take part in a live conversation with UConn School of Law Professor Gaurav Mukherjee, exploring the film’s themes through the lens of legal activism. Stephen Bingham, the subject of the documentary, will join the discussion virtually.
A DOUBLE LIFE tells the extraordinary true story of Stephen Bingham, a civil rights attorney accused in 1971 of smuggling a gun to Black Panther leader George Jackson inside San Quentin State Prison—an act that allegedly triggered a deadly uprising. Fleeing the country, Bingham lived in exile for 13 years, determined to prove his innocence and reclaim his life.

Q&A Speakers
Catherine Masud

Catherine Masud is an award-winning filmmaker with over 30 years of experience in producing, directing and editing, working in both documentary and fictional genres. She produced and co-wrote the acclaimed feature MATIR MOINA (The Clay Bird), which won the International Critics’ Prize at Cannes and became the first Bangladeshi film to compete in the Oscars. Thematically many of her films address social justice issues and the conflict between religious and cultural identity. Her films have screened at major festivals, been theatrically released in many countries, and broadcast on such outlets as Turner Classic Movies, Channel 4 (UK), TV Ontario, and SBS (Australia). An American citizen by birth, Catherine spent much of her adult life in Dhaka, Bangladesh, working together with her late husband and filmmaking partner Tareque Masud. Since her relocation back to the US in 2015, she has divided her time between teaching, writing, and filmmaking. She currently teaches documentary and human rights at the University of Connecticut.
Gaurav Mukherjee

Gaurav Mukherjee is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Connecticut School of Law, where he writes about how constitutional law shapes and is shaped by democratic politics. He is a frequent commentator on Connecticut politics, and his newer work explores how the arts respond to moments of constitutional and human rights crises. Among others, his writing has appeared or is forthcoming in the California Law Review, BYU Law Review, and the Oxford Handbook of Economic and Social Rights.
Stephen Mitchell Bingham

Stephen Mitchell Bingham is an inactive American legal services and civil rights attorney who, after being a fugitive from justice from 1971 to 1984, was tried and acquitted in 1986 for his alleged role in Black Panther George Jackson‘s attempted escape earlier from San Quentin State Prison in Marin County, California, in 1971.
He is the son of Alfred Mitchell Bingham and Sylvia Doughty Knox Bingham and was raised in Salem, Connecticut. His father was an author, attorney, and activist who was elected to the Connecticut State Senate as a New Deal Democrat in 1940 and served one term. His grandfather, Hiram Bingham III, was a governor and a U.S. Senator.
