Palmer-Warner House in East Haddam Celebrates LGBTQ+ Pride Month
Connecticut Landmarks invites visitors to learn about LGBTQ+ history during the Palmer-Warner House’s expanded open tour days this June. Tours will be held Saturdays, June 1–22 from 12 noon–4 pm. The month will culminate in a Pride Month Celebration on Saturday, June 29 from 1 pm–4 pm. Commemorating the Stonewall Uprisings in June 1969, Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate LGBTQ+ identities and communities, more deeply understand LGBTQ+ histories, and laud progress towards freedom and acceptance.
The specialty behind-the-scenes tours will introduce visitors to the house’s residents and explore the themes of Equity, Unity, and Reflection. Explore the contemporary lives of preservation architect Frederic Palmer and his partner Howard Metzger. Together, they created a safe space for friends and family to gather and experience life unrestrained by societal norms within the beautifully constructed landscape they designed and personally maintained.
Guests can learn about the collection of personal diaries and photos used to reconstruct the lives of Frederic and Howard, providing an opportunity to discuss society’s impact on the thoughts and actions of the house’s former residents. Visitors can experience A Historic Timeline of Connecticut’s LGBTQ Community on loan from the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History, which will be on view in the barn. Register for a tour here.
Visitors may also purchase a grounds ticket to explore the 50 acres of New England meadow cultivated by Metzger and Palmer. Grounds tickets include access to view the exhibit in the barn. “Connecticut Landmarks takes seriously its responsibility to share the stories of Frederic Palmer and Howard Metzger and the life they built together in East Haddam. We are so grateful for the opportunity to be in community with our LGBTQ+ friends and allies, and look forward to celebrating and learning with you throughout Pride Month and all year long,” said Shaelyn Amaio, Director of Public Engagement & Marketing for the organization.
On June 29, the commemorations culminate with a Pride Month Celebration featuring special exhibits and presentations in partnership with the East Haddam Historical Society and the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History. Guest speakers include Ken Simon, Emmy award-winning filmmaker, founder of Syracuse New Times, and Executive Producer of SimonPure Media, and Dusty Rader, previous professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and interim Coordinator for the LGBTQ Center at CCSU,who currently serves on the Board of Directors for PROUD Academy.
