New playground at Washington Park in Groton funded by Connecticut Sun Foundation and Brittney Griner

The Connecticut Sun Foundation, Connecticut Sun center Brittney Griner, and the City of Groton will unveil a new playground at Washington Park in Groton on Monday, August 24, 2026. The installation is part of the Sun Foundation’s Forever in Play initiative.

Funding for the project was made possible through matching contributions. The Connecticut Sun Foundation donated $15,000, and Griner contributed $10,000, matching the City of Groton’s $25,000 investment to complete the playground.

The official unveiling will take place during a 3:00 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony at Washington Park, located at 155 Meridian Street in Groton. Representatives from the City of Groton and the Connecticut Sun, along with Griner, are scheduled to speak at the event.

“I think kids should have a safe place to play and be kids, especially outdoors,” Griner said regarding the initiative. “It’s super important for me to do something for the community that I’m playing in, because I’m nothing without the small fans, the little fans, the big fans—all of them.”

The project marks the second collaboration between the Connecticut Sun, the Connecticut Sun Foundation, and the City of Groton at Washington Park. The organizations previously partnered to renovate two basketball courts at the municipal location.

“This new playground equipment represents a meaningful investment in Washington Park and in the children and families who will enjoy it,” said City of Groton Mayor Jill Rusk. “We are grateful to the Connecticut Sun Foundation and Brittney Griner for their generous $25,000 donation, which—together with City funding—made this project possible.”
