New London Maritime Society opens rare tours of Race Rock Light

The New London Maritime Society is offering public excursions to visit the interior of Race Rock Lighthouse for the first time in three years. A limited number of guided trips are scheduled for Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

Excursions will depart on the hour at 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 12:00 p.m. from Silver Eel Cove on Fishers Island, New York. Each tour group is capped at six passengers, with the entire experience estimated to take one hour and 45 minutes.

Travelers departing from mainland Connecticut can access Fishers Island via the Fishers Island Ferry from downtown New London. Participants must arrive by landing craft at the lighthouse, where they will have approximately 45 minutes to explore the site before returning.

Constructed over a seven-year period by Captain T. A. Scott and first lit in 1878, the lighthouse features a Gothic Revival-style granite masonry dwelling with a 67-foot tower. The federal government entrusted the station to the New London Maritime Society in 2013 under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act.

Standard adult tickets cost $135, while tickets for New London Maritime Society members are $110. Proceeds directly benefit the restoration and preservation of local lighthouses managed by the organization.
