New Britain Museum of American Art appoints Director of Learning and Engagement
Emily Dunnack to lead the museum’s education department starting in January 2024
The New Britain Museum of American Art is pleased to announce a recent key appointment to its leadership team. After an extensive search, the NBMAA selected Emily Dunnack as Director of Learning and Engagement.
“Emily Dunnack is a highly-respected museum education leader with a proven record of excellence at esteemed peer institutions like Old Sturbridge Village and the Connecticut Museum of History and Culture,” said Director and CEO Brett Abbott. “She is particularly interested in finding innovative ways to engage students and the community with our historic collection and contemporary special exhibitions.”
Dunnack added, “I have long admired the great work being done at the NBMAA and I’m very excited to join the team! I look forward to working with the staff and community to continue the high-quality educational programming being done and working together to create new opportunities for relevance and engagement.”
Most recently, Dunnack was Director of Education at Old Sturbridge Village, where she served as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, working to align departmental work across the organization, plan strategically to meet goals, nurture DEAI, and foster donor and community relationships.
During her long tenure in Sturbridge, Dunnack led the development of school and summer programs, adult programs, immersive weekly education programming for partner school Old Sturbridge Academy, and a residential summer internship program for college students. Dunnack was co-leader of the “Foundations of Interpretation” NEH-funded interpretive planning project work group, and was a core member of Old Sturbridge Academy Public Charter School founding team.
Prior to her time at Sturbridge, Emily Dunnack was Head of Education Programs at the Connecticut Museum of History and Culture. There, she served as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, worked to develop a new strategic plan, and collaborated to plan exhibitions, programs, and publications.
Emily Dunnack holds a B.A. in Art History from the University of Massachusetts, and a Master’s of Science in Education with a focus on Leadership in Museum Education from Bank Street College. Dunnack will join the leadership team at the New Britain Museum of American Art in January, 2024.
