Mystic Seaport Museum Honored Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret.), with the America and the Sea Award
On Wednesday, October 4, Mystic Seaport Museum presented the 18th annual America and the Sea Award to Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret.), for his contributions to the American maritime culture through his nearly four decades of service and numerous books and articles on leadership, character, risk, the oceans, and maritime affairs.
Adm. Stavridis stated that receiving the award “is a culmination of a lifetime spent at sea, promoting the oceans, defending our nation on the seas, indulging in the beauty of the oceans, teaching this world of the sea, and all of that comes together in this prestigious award.”
Adm. Stavridis spent 37 years in the US Navy achieving the rank of 4-Star Admiral, earning over 50 medals, and spending four years as the Supreme Allied Commander at NATO. He is currently the Managing Director and Vice Chairman, Global Affairs, at the Carlyle Group. He is also Chair of the Board of the Rockefeller Foundation. In addition to attending the US Naval Academy, he received an M.A. and Ph.D. from the Fletcher School at Tufts University. He is the author of twelve books – published in over twenty languages – on leadership, character, risk, the oceans, maritime affairs, and Latin America, as well as hundreds of articles in leading journals. He is a weekly columnist for Bloomberg Opinion and Chief International Analyst for NBC News.
Museum President Peter Armstrong said, “Admiral Stavridis is a kindred spirit with our past Honorees and all of us at Mystic Seaport Museum who share his devotion to the maritime world. The breadth and depth of his varied accomplishments throughout his career represent numerous areas of focus for the America and the Sea Award.”
More than 250 people gathered at the black-tie affair at the Metropolitan Club in New York City to honor Adm. Stavridis and celebrate the nation’s leading maritime museum. The evening included a cocktail reception and conversation with Adm. Stavridis, dinner, award presentation, a lovely tribute video illustrating the level of respect and admiration felt by all for Admiral Stavridis and the tremendous impact he has had on the lives of so many. For the first time in many years the evening included music and dancing as well as maritime trivia. It was an elegant, fun, memorable, and lively event enjoyed by all!
We are grateful to all who participated in the paddle raise initiative, which raised funds for the Brilliant sailing program, described by Captain Sarah Armour as “impactful, introducing teenagers and adults to the thrill and challenge of life at sea.” The importance of the program is evidenced by its transformational effect on the character development of the teens who participate. A heartwarming video was shared at the event and can be viewed here.
In all, the event raised more than $600,000. A heartfelt thank you to the Gala Committee, Board of Trustees, sponsors, ticket buyers, and donors who gave in honor of Adm. Stavridis to further the mission of Mystic Seaport Museum.
